Âncora's ways

2026-08-09

Today, we head north to explore the paths of the Âncora River in Viana do Castelo.

On this trail, we will follow much of the old route that pilgrims used to reach the Monastery of São João d’Arga.

We start from the village of Montaria, where we find the Costa windmills, the Parish Church, and the Calvary hill, striking elements of the history and religiosity so characteristic of this region.

Continue along rural paths and forested areas, where the sun from the small agricultural terraces alternates with the shade of the wooded areas.

Descend towards the Âncora River to find one of the most emblematic places in the Serra d’Arga: the Pincho Waterfall and Lagoon, a space much sought after for its tranquility and captivating beauty.

We will closely follow the Âncora River, searching for other waterfalls and places suitable for contemplation or, perhaps, a refreshing swim. This will be the guiding thread, full of windmills and small irrigation channels, that will lead us back to our meeting point.

This trail is an excellent opportunity to discover some of the most beautiful spots in the Serra d’Arga and enjoy a route that combines nature, heritage, and unforgettable landscapes.
