Leaving the Merujal campground, we head toward the small, picturesque mountain village that bears its name. Along the way, amid rocks, stone walls, and lush pastures, we make our way to the village of Mizarela, where we take a brief break to admire the imposing waterfall of the same name. A little further on, we cross the waters of the Caima River, which here plunges over a drop of more than 60 meters.
We continue across the central plateau of the Serra da Freita and descend slightly into the fertile Castanheiro Valley, where we’ll have the opportunity to visit the Pedras Parideiras interpretation center and gain a better understanding of this curious geological phenomenon. We then return to the Freita plateau to discover Portela da Anta, the Pedras Boroas, and the village of Albergaria da Serra. Here we cross the Caima River once more, beginning our return to the starting point.
