At the source of the Ave river

We set off from the Anjos forest lodge and immediately step into that pure mountain atmosphere: ancient trails, highland scrub, exposed rock, and a silence found nowhere else. The mountain range unfolds before us, and every step reveals a little more of the raw power of the Serra da Cabreira. Our first major stop is the source of the Ave River—a simple yet magical spot. Water springs from the earth with absolute purity at a hidden location that seems to whisper, "This is where it all begins." It is impossible not to feel the energy of this place.

From there, we head up the mountain toward the summit of Cabreira, at 1,262 meters. The ascent is challenging and beautiful, filled with that satisfying sense of achievement. And when we reach the top... the world opens up. With the Cabreira range at our feet, deep, seemingly endless valleys stretch out before us. In the distance, we can see the Gerês and Lameira ranges, and—on clear days—the Serra da Freita. It is one of those moments etched into memory; this landscape makes every meter of the climb and every drop of sweat worthwhile.

The descent follows a mix of wide paths and mountain trails, always offering magnificent panoramas and the feeling of being in truly wild territory. It is the perfect balance of challenge, beauty, adventure, and reward.
