Exploring the Serra Amarela along the GR34 trail—connecting the Vilarinho das Furnas Dam, Alto da Louriça, Ermida, Germil, Cutelo, Casarotas, and as Chãs—means traversing a challenging landscape of great scenic beauty, winding through mountain villages, ridges, and plateaus on a two-day loop hike.
The program begins with arrival at Campo do Gerês in the late afternoon, where check-in takes place at Albergaria Stop, which serves as the base for the weekend. After dinner, there is a briefing with a presentation of the route, analysis of the elevation profiles, and logistical planning for the following days.
On the second day, the route begins in Campo do Gerês, heading toward the Vilarinho das Furnas dam, passing by the reservoir and the ruins of the old submerged village. This is followed by the ascent to Alto da Louriça, along demanding but gradual mountain trails, with sweeping views over the Homem Valley. The descent leads to Ermida, covering about 20 km, and the return to the lodging is made for rest and socializing.
On the third day, the trail begins in Ermida, with an ascent toward Germil and a passage through Cutelo, following ancient paths used by local communities.
