New Year in International Douro

2026-12-31

It will undoubtedly be one of the best ways to start 2027! We have a series of hikes planned to explore some of the most enigmatic spots in the Douro International region. The year 2027 will begin amidst majestic landscapes where griffon vultures and eagles find their finest nesting grounds.

Day 31
We arrive at our hotel in the mid-afternoon. After settling in comfortably, we’ll have time for a short walk to explore the historic center of Miranda do Douro or simply rest after our journey. We’ll enjoy dinner and keep the party going late into the night, celebrating the New Year twice, once for for Spain, just across the Douro River and again for the portugese hour!

Day 1
The new year begins with an epic hike to the São João das Arribas hermitage. This trek takes us along the Douro River’s cliffs and sheer escarpments, with the river waters flowing leisurely far below. It is a day without major ascents or descents—fitting for the famous Mirandês plateau—as we walk among oaks, ash trees, and massive holm oaks. The highlight will be the São João das Arribas hermitage; true to its name ("Arribas" meaning cliffs), it was built on a small peninsula surrounded by rocky crags, offering breathtaking views in every direction.

Day 2
On the second day, we cross the border to explore the opposite riverbank. The day features a unique forest where junipers reign supreme—some of them truly massive. We continue with river views and stop at various overlooks that reveal more cliffs and river bends, showcasing landscapes so rich they never cease to amaze us. We will also visit a sanctuary and walk along a small stream where we can still see many of the mills where, in times past, the power of the water turned grain into flour.
Trail:Discovering Cozcurrita”; Distance: 16Km; Elevation Gain: 680 m; Difficulty: 3.

Day 3
We saved a route for the final day that, in a way, encapsulates the International Douro region, its people, and its customs. We begin by visiting the village of Picote before heading to the famous Fraga do Puio—likely the region's most renowned viewpoint. We continue walking through farmland framed by ash and oak trees as we approach the riverbanks. We will visit the Fraga Amarela viewpoint, which, despite being lesser-known, is our personal favorite. There is also time to visit the Cigaduenha hillfort, a testament to ancient Iron Age civilizations.
