Our route begins in the small mountain village of Penhas da Saúde, from where we'll descend following a small stream.
The landscape around us is rough, with granite blocks piled up and little vegetation. We'll continue along this trail until we come to a steeper part of the mountain where we'll start to climb until we reach the famous Varanda dos Pastores (Shepherds' Balcony). Here the landscape is breathtaking, with views of the villages of Cortes do Meio and Cortes de Cima and the fertile valley of Fundão, as well as the mountains of Malcata, Açor and Gardunha in the distance.
We resumed our journey in the direction of Viriato Lake, with the Torre and the central plateau always within our sight. Before passing the blue shores of the lake and returning to our starting point, we still have time to visit the Piornos viewpoint, with a good view of the main aspects of the glaciation of the eastern sector of the Serra da Estrela.
