The Stag rutting between villages and rocks

2024-10-06

A special walk to try to hear and, with some luck, see the stag during the rutting season.

We start by visiting the small village of Aigra Nova and  from where we will begin a gentle climb through tall heather and the occasional schist outcrop.

After passing the picturesque village of Aigra Velha, we travel along the slopes of the mountain, as if drawing gentle contour lines. Always paying attention to the sounds and movements, we try to locate the deer that, at this stage of the year, fill these valleys with their roars, trying to find the best breeding partners.

Suddenly we divert onto a small trail that goes down to the Pena stream and we have, in front of us, the imposing rocks of Góis, a quartzite ridge that prevails over the schist.

We descend these slopes to the village of Pena and, crossing its river once again, we return to our starting point.
