On this adventure, we'll venture into the heart of the Peneda-Gerês National Park to hike the trail connecting the village of Campo do Gerês to the ancient city of Calcedónia, passing through the impressive Calcedónia fissure and returning to Campo do Gerês for a well-deserved dinner.
The trail begins in Campo do Gerês and climbs along ancient mountain paths, crossing wooded areas and granite outcrops. We'll reach the Junceda viewpoint, with sweeping views over the Cávado River valley, the Caniçada reservoir, and the surrounding mountains. From there, we'll head towards Calcedónia, passing through the fortified village, where vestiges of the ancient "city" are still visible, now enveloped by vegetation and rock.
The most challenging and famous point of the route is the Calcedónia Fissure: a narrow passage between enormous granite blocks, which requires the use of hands for support and a bit of adventurous spirit.
After passing through the crevice, we began the descent towards the ancient Roman road, traversing part of its historical sections and, in a gentler environment, we returned to Campo do Gerês.
At the end of the hike, we finished the day in the best way: a dinner of traditional Portuguese food in a local restaurant, with typical regional dishes, good wine, and time for socializing and sharing the stories of the day.
